Family vacations were great but when you think back to them you wonder how your parents even pulled it off? Your dad, driving the family car down roads he’d never been on, with only sides and a sketchy piece of paper with lines all over it telling him where to go. Your mom, trying to get some sleep in to take over the night shift of driving. You and your siblings in the back seat, trying to stay as occupied as possible without losing your minds.
Traveling in 2020 for families has certainly changed. Now, technology entertains and guides us on these long trips, telling us not only which roads to take, but which roads are the fastest. Kids can watch their favorite television shows and movies to keep them entertained from the second they get into the car to the minute you arrive to your destination. You know when and where you can stop, how long the drive should take and so much more.
Yes, traveling is more convenient than ever. However, that doesn’t mean you should take it for granted. There are some things your parents knew how to do on these trips that we should also learn. How to change tires, when to schedule breaks for lunch, getting gas, taking breaks to enjoy the sights and so forth. Sometimes, the fastest route may not be the best route, especially if you have a chance to drive somewhere that’s very scenic.
The best thing to do is to make sure that you have an understanding of your vehicle, where everything is, that you pack plenty of snacks and water for the road, have a good idea of the route you need to take so that you are not just relying on GPS and make sure that you have the numbers of the places you are going to, the address and other info written down so that you have a backup in case you cannot access your phone. Sometimes there’s nothing wrong with going a little old school.
