Maximizing Your Traveling Without Using Vacation Days
Vacation days are more valuable to us than water. Not really, but you get the point. You have to use them smartly and at the end of the year you want to make sure that each one of them counts for something. While every company has different rules on vacation days, including how many you get, if they roll over to the next year or not, how many you can take consecutively, certain times of the year you can and cannot take them and so forth, the basics are usually similar. For each year or several years, you work with the company you see an increase in vacation days allowed. Whether you’ve been with the company for a year or five years, you need to know how to make these days work to your advantage and still give yourself plenty of time to travel and enjoy yourself.
Travel is one of the biggest challenges when it comes to time off. You do not want to waste an entire day or half a day traveling to a destination and back. That literally means you are losing precious time off in order to just travel to the location you want to visit. If the trip can be made in fewer than five hours, consider traveling on a Thursday night rather than Friday. This way you only take Friday off and you have all day Friday and Saturday to enjoy the destination before you head back on Sunday.
Method of travel is also important. If you are driving for example, you will save money, but you also have to do the actual driving. If you are flying or traveling by train, consider going in the middle of the night. It may not be the best night of sleep you have but it saves you time and you will wake up the next morning at your destination and ready to enjoy your weekend.
We all love the idea of taking a week off and in some cases, if it’s possible to do that, it’s a great break from work. However, some jobs are so demanding that taking a week off can cause more problems than it solves. You have to put in extra work before and after your week off just so that you do not fall behind. If that’s the case, then how is it really a vacation? You may want to consider breaking those days off into having longer weekends throughout the year. For example, you know that Labor Day Weekend is coming up and instead of taking a week of, try to take the Tuesday after off so that you have a nice four-day weekend. That gives you almost a week off from work, but you are technically only using one day of your vacation days. Things like this can help you travel more throughout the year and visit more places or your favorite places more often. You also can take breaks more often so that work doesn’t get overwhelming throughout the year.
