When you don’t have time for a full-fledged vacation, a weekend getaway is a vacation-savvy alternative!
With everyone back to school and work, it can be tough to get away for a week. But you can still live it up with a weekend getaway. Read on to figure out what to do and where to go for your next quick trip.
Tips for Success
A long weekend getaway gives you a few days to step out of your regular life. But it’s just that: a few days. So, you’ll want to maximize your time and soak up every minute.
- We know it’s tempting, but don’t go too far away. Choose a destination that won’t take too long to get to. You don’t want to waste your weekend getaway in transit.
- Carry-ons only! Minimize hassle and avoid fees by not checking a bag. That way, once you’re on the ground, you can get right to relaxing.
- Plan well. With limited time, you want to make sure you know what’s going to happen each day. Don’t spend your morning figuring out what to do. Here are some websites to help you plan your itineraries.
- Remember, you only have a few days, so only include what’s most important to you in your agenda. And don’t forget to plan relaxation.
Now, where do you want to go? The best destinations for a weekend getaway allow you to get there fast, are open late, and have lots to do. Check out some of our best suggestions.
New Orleans, LA
The Big Easy is a perfect weekend getaway. Of course, Bourbon Street offers music, drinks, and late nights. Or, consider quieter Frenchmen Street for a less touristy, more authentic experience. Spend a lazy morning with beignets at Café Du Monde and then hop on St. Charles Streetcar (the nation’s only moving historic landmark) to take in the Garden District and a cemetery tour. The National World War II Museum is another popular spot filled with dynamic exhibits. At night, you can look forward to staying in one of the French Quarters’ romantic hotels. Of course, it may be morning by the time you’re ready for bed!
For a romantic, low-key weekend getaway, you can’t beat Asheville, NC. This mountain town is home to America’s largest home, The Biltmore. The 8,000-acre estate includes the 250-room home plus spectacular gardens. We highly recommend a tour. You’ll also find restaurants and a winery to complete your experience. Asheville boasts a thriving arts community, too. So you can immerse yourself in the River Arts District popping with eclectic galleries and shops. When you get hungry, savor tapas at Curate or brunch at the local favorite Tupelo Honey Café.
The Windy City has a lot to offer—even in just a few days. Don’t miss the Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise. Sip a cocktail while learning all about the town’s amazing architecture. Then hit up Millennium Park to experience Cloudgate, the sculpture locals lovingly refer to as the Bean. Museums like the Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry are fantastic ways to spend the afternoon. Or check out history of another kind at historic Wrigley Field. Make sure to get your Chicago-style hot dog with the works, and that means no ketchup! If the hot dog isn’t enough, you’ll have no shortage of restaurants to choose from. Whether you’re looking for Michigan stars at Alinea or pizza from Lou Malnati’s, you won’t leave hungry!
Martha’s Vineyard, MA
Countless adorable weekend getaway spots in New England abound. We think Martha’s Vineyard offers a little bit of everything. Stay at the beachfront Winnetu Oceanside Resort and experience the advantages of the beach (and a life-size chess board) or enjoy one of the countless B&B’s scattered everywhere. Explore the island’s five lighthouses for a glimpse into the past. Nature lovers can indulge in the many beaches and the Aquinnah Cliffs or delve into the beauty of the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary. You have your choice of so many landscapes plus quintessential New England towns like Edgartown and Oak Bluffs. And did we mention the seafood?
We know Napa Valley gets most of the California winery fanfare, but Sonoma holds its own without the crowds. On a weekend getaway, you can’t get to all the wineries, so you’ll have to narrow down your list. But one way to do that is to consider a wine bike tour! Wine Country Bikes in Healdsburg supplies everything you need—including a picnic lunch and wine holders for your bike! Sonoma stretches all the way to the coast, so take in the sights at Sonoma Coast State Park. When you’re thoroughly dazzled go grab dinner from one of the arrays of memorable restaurants…and maybe another bottle of wine.
